Delta Michelangelo 2 Bike Gravity Rack Review – Results of our Testing

Delta Cycle’s Two-Bike Michelangelo Gravity Rack is easy to install, sturdy, can accommodate any style of bike, and won’t damage walls! Whether you’re looking to display bikes or store them for regular use, the Michelangelo is a really convenient solution.

How it Works

Delta Cycle’s Michelangelo rack leans against the wall and uses the force of gravity to keep it securely in place. No hardware required to mount to the wall!

Two independent arms cradle each bike above the ground. The arms can be placed at any height on the rack’s powder-coated tubing to accommodate horizontal and sloping top tubes, and even youth bikes! For sloping top tubes, the back arm cradles the frame in the triangle behind the seat post.

Rubber bumpers on the legs of the stand protect the floor and wall from damage. Rubber sleeves on the arms also protect bikes from scratches and nicks.

For additional (but not required) stability, a stabilizing strap is included and can be connected to the wall. If you go this route, you will have to attach a screw to the wall. In the left image below you can see the stabilizing strap hanging down from the top bar. (It is not connected to the wall.)

Capacity

The Michelangelo Gravity Rack accommodates up to two adult or youth bikes. The standard version of the rack can handle up to 80 lbs, while the Rugged Rack Series (pictured in this review) supports up to 100 lbs.

The two versions also have slightly different dimensions, which may make a difference to you based on the amount of space you have. Standard version: 83″ x 19.75″ x 16″, Rugged Rack Series version: 86″ x 23.5″ x 13.75″.

Assembly

The Michelangelo is soooo easy to put together. I’m the first to admit that I’m pretty terrible at following assembly instructions. But I was able to put this stand together in about 5 to 10 minutes while a wild baby was running around at my feet.

For maximum stability, make sure that the bottom legs are turned away from each other as far as possible before tightening the bolts.

For extra support, you have the option of securing the rack to the wall with a stabilizing strap. We found the rack to be incredibly stable on its own, but if you live in an area with earthquakes or have an earthquake-like toddler, it wouldn’t hurt.

We do have one very important caution about the installation process. Try to figure out as best as possible where you want to place the bike support arms before you put them on. While it’s really easily to remove them and re-adjust them to place them differently, the white/clear rubber surrounding the metal that wraps around the tubing can rip if you move it too many times.

Because we were moving one particular arm many times to try out several different bikes while testing, the tubing on that arm ripped. As a result, the metal of the arm is exposed through the end of the rubber and can scratch the primary tubing of the rack. If it happened to rip off entirely, it wouldn’t hold the arm securely in place. To be fair, most people won’t be moving the arms around that much, but it did concern us enough to mention.

Bottom Line

The Michelangelo Two Bike Gravity Rack is a sturdy, easy-to-use, easy-to-assemble bike storage rack that will organize your space without damaging your walls. Be sure not to re-adjust the bike support arms too much or the rubber may wear. Read our master list on storage to find more options for indoor and outdoor bike storage.
