Bobike Go Review: Results of our Test Rides
Designed specifically for the international market, the Bobike Go offers has an highly adaptable mounting bracket (available as a rack and frame mount) and top-notch durability in a family-friendly price tag. Weighing in at just 7 lb. (3,215 g), the lightweight Go offers a double-walled shell, extended head protection, and tool-free adjustments, all for a budget-friendly price. As an added bonus, the Go is available in 5 different pastel colors – yellow, white, mint green, pink, and dark grey.
The frame-mounted and rack-mounted Go’s are identical except for the mounting brackets on the bottom of the seats. We were provided with the rack-mounted seat to test out. The seat itself does not come with a bike rack, but should adhere to almost any rack. We mounted our Go onto the Topeak Explorer rack without any concerns.
To mount the seat, you simply place the seat over the rack, ensuring the two plastic clamping tabs are around the sides of the rack, and then twist the locking knob until it tightens. This process requires no tools and also allows you to adjust the seat forward or back on the rack. Once firmly in place, the seat also comes with a securing strap to wrap around the seatpost of the bike. To prevent kids from inadvertently loosening the seat, the knob has a safety feature that required you to push firmly in on the knob before you can tighten or untighten it.
The Bobike Go has a three-point harness that goes over the child’s head before it buckles into the seat. The shoulder straps can be adjusted in three different places. The top portion of the straps has three insertion points to account for the height of the child, while the webbing on the straps has an upper adjustment on each strap and a third adjustment just above the buckle.
The buckles are easy to adjust, but we were disappointed to find that the shoulder straps didn’t cinch down small enough to tightly hold our 1-year-old tester. As shown in the second picture below, even with both the top and bottom strap adjusters cinched down as small as they could go, there was still quite a bit of space between the straps and our testers.
To eliminate the gap in the straps, we had to insert the top of the straps into the top insertion point to compensate for the extra straps (third picture). To provide maximum protection, the insertion point of shoulder straps in child bike seats should be just above the child’s shoulders (like with a car seat), so moving them up isn’t ideal. As a result, we believe the Go is best suited for older or taller toddlers (tester is 15-months in pictures).
Extended Head Coverage
As shown above, the Go has an extended head shield that wraps around the head to protect the head during particularly rough portions of a ride as well as to provide kids with a place to rest their head if they fall asleep. Unlike the Bobike Exclusive Tour, the headrest is fixed in place and will not adjust up as the child grows taller. This makes it likely to be too short to offer additional protection to taller preschoolers.
Footrest and Leg Shields
Footrests keep your child’s feet safely tucked away while also preventing them from kicking you during the ride! To adjust for the height and size of your child, the foot trays easily adjust up or down via a small plastic lever on the back of the trays. To adjust, you simply lift the lever up and the push or pull the tray to the correct height.
The help keep the feet in place, there are rubber foot straps that easily fold over the child’s foot and then hook into place. The incorporated leg shields on the Bobike Go keep little legs safely away from the rear tire.
Bobike Go Plus Helmet
Available in the coordinating colors of the Bobike Go seat, the Bobike Go Plus helmet is a great helmet for toddlers and preschoolers. The Go Plus is available in two sizes, extra-small (48-52 cm) and small (52 – 56 cm). The helmet we were provided was a size small, which was too big for our one-year-old tester but was a great fit for our three-year-old tester. With in-mold construction and a dial-adjust system, the helmet was easy to adjust, even on our wiggly one-year-old.
The Bobike Go is a great choice for older or taller toddlers preschoolers about age 2.5 and up. While the Go is very durable and easy-to-use, but the long shoulder straps prevent it from being used with younger toddlers. The Bobike Exclusive Tour is only available through authorized BoBike dealers.
