In our full review below, we’ll discuss all the features, as well as detail sizing vs Micro’s other scooters.

Micro Maxi Deluxe Scooter Review- Results of our Test Rides
A very distinct ride from your typical kick scooter, our testers were delighted by the unique and smooth surfing motion of the Micro Maxi. With a soft foot deck that maximizes stability and comfort, and minimizes injuries, both the kids and us parents quickly became huge fans. In fact, we love Micro Kickboard’s scooters so much we immediately added them to the top of our Best Kids Scooters list.
Scooter Performance
The Micro Kickboard Maxi scooter is not the scooter you grew up with! With a unique skateboard-style steering technique, our official testers (kids), and non-official testers (parents!) had a blast exploring on a scooter that offers a one-of-a-kind riding experience.
The Maxi Micro creates a riding experience similar to that of a skateboard by allowing the rider to carve turns, but with the added security of t-bar handlebars for extra stability and maneuverability. This lean-to-steer movement is much different than a traditional scooter on which you steer by turning the front wheel with the handlebars. Although this does take some practice to get the hang of, once mastered, kids love the smooth, leisurely ride and surfer-like vibe.
The 3 wheeled set-up and 5.5″ wide foot deck also contribute to an extra stable ride, less falls, and fewer injuries. While the confidence of our timid and average riders benefited from these stable and lightweight scooters, our aggressive riders took advantage of these same features for safer acceleration, “air hops”, and surfing the sidewalk.
With a foot platform made from reinforced flexible fiberglass and wheels of polyurethane, the ride is exceptionally smooth and quiet. While traditional Razor style scooters serve their own purpose, the Micro Kickboards blow them out of the water in smoothness and ease of the riding experience. None of the clickity clack against the sidewalk cracks on these kickboards!
One important note on performance – these scooters are not great for skate parks. The carving and surfing motion that makes them so awesome for smooth cruising limits their ability to make quick turns. We actually took them to a skate park to test them out and it didn’t go so well . 🙂
Maxi Micro Scooter Sizing and Components
Maxi Micro Deluxe Scooter Size

- Handlebar Height: The Maxi’s adjustable handlebars allow riders to grow with the scooter – with almost 10″ of adjustability from min to max or 24″ to 33.5″ from the deck. As seen below with our 5-year-old rider, the handlebar is set to its minimum on the left, and its maximum on the right.
To get an idea of just how long your child can comfortably ride the Micro Maxi, here’s a comparison of a 5 year old, 8 year old, and 12 year old, ranging in height from 43″ to 60″
Many parents also wonder about the sizing difference between the Micro Maxi and Micro Mini scooters. The Maxi’s handlebars are higher, and the deck is wider and longer. While a tall 3-year-old or a 4-year-old certainly could ride the Maxi, the smaller mini is easier for them to manage.
Below you can see our 40″ tall year old rider on both the Maxi and Mini. On the left the Maxi’s handlebars are at their lowest point. On the right, the Mini’s handlebars are at their highest point.
While she can ride the Maxi, it’s much easier for her to ride the Mini. As a result, we recommend the youngest child on the Maxi to be approaching 5 years old, or very tall for their younger age.
Scooter Components and Quality of Build
Foot platform
The foot deck of the Micro Maxi Deluxe scooter is definitely a standout feature. Constructed of reinforced flexible fiberglass, the deck absorbs impact from the ground and makes for an incredibly smooth ride.
We also love that the entire deck is anti-slip silicone injected, so even in wet conditions, your child’s feet can stay firmly planted. And being 5’5″ wide (traditional Razor has a 3.5″ deck), the scooter is just more stable and more comfortable to ride than most other scooters. (The deck on the Mini is 4.5″, which is perfect for smaller feet.)
How do you steer a Micro Kickboard Scooter?
The handlebars are another defining feature of the Micro Kickboard Maxi Scooters. Like outlined above, because the handlebars are stationary and don’t turn to move the front wheels, the foot platform also doesn’t turn. By leaning to steer, the scooter is more stable and safer!
Have you ever had the metal foot deck on a traditional kick scooter whack you in the ankles?? Man, that hurts, but that’s no longer a problem on the Micro scooters! In fact, while it’s very rare to have a child tester actually be able to articulate why they like something, even when you ask them, our 7-year-old and 9-year-old testers actually brought this added bonus up on their own.
The T-bar features really comfortable soft rubber hand grips that also have rubber ends to protect hands from falls or when hitting walls. But the best thing about the grips is that unlike many other scooters, the hand grips are not foam, which can tear and also get pretty dirty very quickly.
What color options are available?
The stem of the scooter is a beautiful, smooth anodized aluminum that comes in 12 different color options for the Maxi. The grips and deck are a similar shade to the anodized aluminum.
What type of wheels do the Micro Maxi have?
With two larger polyurethane wheels in front (120 mm) and a smaller wheel in the back (80 mm), the Micro Kickboard’s wheels are also a huge factor in the stability and smoothness of the ride. But remember that stability is not the only purpose for this 3-wheeled setup – it’s all about the lean to steer design, skateboard motion experience!
Our testers also benefited from the non-marking polyurethane wheels, along with the fiberglass deck, because we actually let them cruise around the wood floors in the house on bad weather days!
Optional LED Light Up Wheels
If you’ll be riding outside at night (stay safe!), the Micro Maxi Deluxe has two different models that offer LED light-up front wheels. (The rear wheels don’t light up.) There’s the Maxi Deluxe LED ($149) and the Maxi Deluxe Foldable LED ($159).
The light up front wheels on the Micro Maxi are an added bonus we didn’t know our kids needed! While the light-up wheels are visible in most lighting, they really shine (physically and metaphorically) in the dark; the darker your riding location the more visible the lights on the wheels are whenever they’re in motion. The lights are white, not colors like you may have seen on other brands.
While we thought these wheels would lose their “coolness” factor over time, they haven’t. Our kid testers love to ride around the driveway after the sun has gone down watching the lights on their wheels light up.
If you don’t plan to have your kids outside after dark, the light up wheels don’t need to be a big factor in your buying decision, but we’ve enjoyed the fact that these wheels encourage our kids to get out and move after dinner instead of sitting in front of a screen.
How do the brakes work on the Maxi?
Because the back wheel is actually a set of double wheels, the brake on the Micro Kickboard Maxi is beefier than on a traditional scooter and also features a handy non-slip silicone cover to keep your foot in place. To engage the fender brake, the child rider simply needs to press down on the brake with their foot.
Ease of Transport and Storage
The standard version of the Micro Maxi allows you to remove the t-bar for compact storage. We’ve used this version for years and have appreciated how quickly we can stash these under seats in the car!
Like all of Micro’s scooters, the Maxi comes in several models with different upgrades. The Foldable Micro Maxi Deluxe folds in half, rather than removing the t-bar. This model also has LED lights, comes in 5 colors, and is more expensive at $159.
The base of the Foldable Micro Maxi has two black plastic sleeves. To fold the t-bar down you simply pull up on the top plastic sleeve. This releases the lock that holds the t-bar upright and allows you to fold the scooter in half. This is something our kid testers haven’t been able to master yet, but for adults it’s simple, easy, and makes storage a breeze.
Micro Maxi Deluxe Bottom Line
You’re going to be hard-pressed to find another scooter with the quality and durability of the Maxi Micro Deluxe. If you’re headed for the skate park or primarily want to do tricks, this isn’t the scooter for you. But if you want a super smooth, easy, and unique ride, the Micro Kickboards will have you surfing the sidewalk in no time.
