What is a “Pre-Balance” Bike?
Kids as young as 12-months are NOT able to ride a true balance bike because they haven’t yet mastered walking and running. Ride-on toys that teach a child to sit and push with their feet to move and/or teach a child to steer are great “pre-balance bikes” for young toddlers. They teach the basics without requiring them to balance the bike.
You’ll notice none of the “bikes” on this list have pedals. At this age, kids need to be preparing for a balance bike, which also doesn’t have pedals. Small ride-on toys with pedals may be cute, but they won’t help your child learn to sit and push with their feet – simple, but necessary skills for a balance bike rider.
